Learn About Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is insulin insensitivity and the decrease of insulin production. This disease begins as a reduction in response to insulin by the cells of the body. As a result, insulin levels increase in the blood. Control at this point involves medications that reduce glucose production or increase insulin sensitivity. As the disease gets worse the addition of insulin is usually required.
Factors Leading To Type 2
While the exact cause of Type 2 diabetes is not known, there are several contributing factors. People shaped like apples that have fat around the waist are more prone to this disease. Abdominal fat produces hormones that might cause a reduction in glucose tolerance. Other possible contributing factors are family history and the natural aging process.
Symptoms
It is very difficult to spot type 2 diabetes based on symptoms as they come on so gradually as to go unnoticed. However this disease does have some long-term pathologies such as renal failure, heart disease, blindness, nerve damage, and slow wound healing.
Treatment
Treatment of type 2 diabetes has several steps. To begin the patient is encouraged to begin exercising. Even a brisk walk ½ hour a day will help to decrease the disease’s severity. Diet is another step to recovery with emphasis on a healthy balanced diet devoid of fatty foods and foods with refined sugars. There are situations when this is all that is needed to bring the diabetes under control and no further measures need to taken.
However, when diet and exercise are not sufficient then medications are added to the regimen. Usually an oral medicine is prescribed. This pill improves insulin production, and controls release of glucose into the blood. If and when the oral medication is no longer able to keep the patient healthy than insulin is added to control the diabetes.
