Preventing Diabetes
If you are overweight, have high glucose levels, or if you have diabetic family members, then you are at risk for diabetes. The good news is that there are ways to prevent this serious disease. By making a couple of simple lifestyle modifications, people with diabetes have the opportunity to live diabetes-free.
Some diabetics choose to take glucose-lowering medication to fend off diabetes. However, diabetic medications require constant monitoring and merely delay or reduce the progression of diabetic development. On the other hand, making dietary changes and participating in exercise are the most common and effective means of preventing diabetes.
Minor dietary changes combined with regular exercise can significantly reduce the chance of obtaining diabetes. While there is not a “best diet” for diabetic prevention, the successful diet consists of reducing fat and saturated fat, and increasing fiber. Fortunately there are many cookbooks with recipes for diabetes conscious people. Choosing one that fits your lifestyle will enable you to create a successful menu planner. This, paired with daily activities (gym workout, swimming, jogging, or any fun physical activity of choice), results in a positive outcome of weight loss and lower glucose levels; the two contributing factors of diabetes. Because these changes are relatively easy to incorporate into daily life, the most difficult task may be tracking progress.
Acquiring a booklet that contains a fat and calorie counter can be referenced as you record your daily food and drink intake. Also, track how much time you exercised and when. This information will prove valuable when shared with your physician. Visiting a doctor at least once a year for a physical checkup enables individuals to monitor their glucose levels, weight, and blood pressure. Keeping up-to-date and aware of this data is important for diabetes prevention.
For those who are unable to prevent diabetes or who are at risk for diabetes, there are dozens of steps that can be taken to delay or minimize this medical condition. Here are a few important pre-diabetes exercises:
• Eat healthy – select a diabetic meal plan
• Exercise – participate in physical activity at least 5 days a week
• Nurture – enjoy a form(s) of relaxation that “feeds” your mind and soul
Even though diabetes treatments are being developed, a cure does not yet exist. For this reason it’s important to take steps to avoid this detrimental disease if at all possible. In short, good nutrition and staying physically active is the best prescription for diabetes prevention.
